In Which New Bonds Form and Old Ones Strengthen

Wally could not recall the last time he’d seen Superman upset. Ok, he’d seen his pissed off a number of times at various evil henchmen and real big baddies like Darkseid, but not upset. Not like this.

The ‘Man Of Steel’ was, at the moment, wearing the reading glasses he used in his day identity of Clark Kent. It was an odd picture, especially with the tome he was scouring for any sign of the jewels that took Shayera. His brows were knit together and the look in his eyes bellied his worry. Wally knew how he felt. Shayera had always been there, allowing the Flash to flirt and charm all he could to no avail. She made witty comebacks to his playful come-ons, listened to his ideas, and generally treated him like a….her word for it was Cha’ne, or little brother. She was also one of the original seven, and her redemption in recent months made her an inspiration to those who felt they’d fallen out of grace forever. Wally couldn’t count the number of people he’d seen in his hometown who’d told him how Shayera’s strength had inspired them to kick habits ranging from drug abuse to gang activity and become something. Those same people, he was certain, were now searching just as had for any news. Their e-mails were in his PDA, with a sound to alert him to any messages.
“Any luck?” He asked. Superman removed his glasses, sighing.
“Not a bit. I’ve got to get to work, too, or Perry will get suspicious. Lois too.”
“Ok. Go get a few hours sleep, ok? You’re not much use running yourself ragged, Supes.” Superman smiled weakly and nodded, yawning.
He walked passed Wally sleepily and down the stairs. As soon as he left, Wally slumped down in the seat the Kryptonian had occupied minutes before and put his head in his hands. A month and a half and nothing had come up.
At first he was so sure they’d get her home by weeks end. Now Wally was losing hope that he’d see Shayera in life ever again. Wrapped up as he was in his sorrow, he didn’t hear John until the man laid a hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see the dark eyes of the un-powered John, who’d changed into his street clothes earlier that evening. He set an iced Chai Tea in front of Wally and a couple of Oops! Oreos and sat down next to him.
“Hey.” Was all he said. Wally, for a moment, wanted to rail at him, but instead he turned his eyes down.
“I miss her.”
“So do I. Not that I don’t deserve the worry after what I did. I—I haven’t been sleeping too well.” And he looked it. From the red-rimmed eyes to the weak pallor of his skin, John looked as if sleep had forever abandoned him.

“You have nightmares about Rex, don’t you?” For a moment, John was startled by the insightfulness of his young friend. He had indeed been seeing his child in his nightmares, cursing him for his stubborn refusal of his future.
“Yeah. He is---would be---a great warrior. He was so serious, though.”
“Remind yourself to make me Godfather. I’ll fix that.” John laughed, hoarse but heartfelt. Trust Wally to do such a thing as make a depressed man laugh.
“Yeah. I will. Assuming his mother returns…..” He fell back in his seat, one of the old cultural books in his hands, staring at the pages. There was silence for a long time, a companionable one, unlike that in recent weeks. Wally had hated the man before him, turned so much against him that the rest of the league could feel it. But now…now they were united once more in their search for Shayera. For the one who completed their odd, minor trio.
It was ten minutes later that Wally’s PDA began flashing wildly, alerting him that he had an incoming call from a top-priority contact.
“Flash here.” he said, as a deathly silent John looked on,” Oh, hi Olivia. Yeah…yeah…wha—wait, what? You sure? You really, really sure? No, I haven’t been talking to Kar, I’m normally like this. Right. Oh, man….hey, call me after this is over. I so owe you dinner. Yeah, I’ll call Linda. Yeah. Ok, thanks! Ye…yeah..I’ll bring her when we get her back. No, she won’t be interested in Kit’s brother, give him to Kar. OOk, bye.” He hung up and grinned at John, though his look sank at the highly amused look on John’s face.
“Incredible, you’re phone calls are weirder than your normal conversations. Whos Kit, Kar, and Olivia?”
“Long story. But they got something. Have you ever heard of the Hojo clan?” John shook his head. Wally whipped out his PDA/phone and flipped it sideways, revealing its use as a mini-laptop. Typing in ‘Hojo Triforce.’ he hit enter and a webpage popped up. Seeing as how it was too difficult to try and show John and read at once, he read it aloud:

“In the fictional world of the Legend of Zelda series: books, the Triforce is a legendary relic consisting of three triangular fragments, called the Triforce of Power, the Triforce of Wisdom, and the Triforce of Courage. The shape of the Triforce is based on the mon (crest) of the Hojo family in Japan. The Hojo family claims that the three triangles represent the three scales of a Shinto dragon.” He stopped,” John, it’s a BOOK. Written ages ago, when this family was in power.”
“A book.” John said, “ but what about the three stones?”
“ Also in the book. It’s the legend of three jewels that open a door in some temple of time and allow the Hero of Time to save a mythical land from extinction. Three jewels…”
“A Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald!” John jumped out of his chair and ran towards the mess hall, where the others were taking much-needed breaks. Wonder Woman and Mari were in one corner, eating what looked like spaghetti. J’onn was about to put one of his much-loved oreoes in his mouth when John flew in, eyes wide and breath erratic. The whole room of about 30 superheroes fell silent at his appearance, all holding their breath.
“John, please tell me your face means what I think it means..” Superman asked softly. John nodded just as Wally practically skipped into the hall, grinning ear to ear.
“The Goofy Trio does it again. First they find me the limited edition of Half-Blood Prince and now they got me info on the jewels!” Wonder Woman let out a breath, thankful that her failure to find what they needed wasn’t the end of the line.
“Tell those three I’ll fly them to Tokyo for a weekend.” Superman said, relief evident. The rest of the group went back to their meals, slightly happier for the news. Shayera may have had a troubled past, but she was still one of them.
“What did you find?” Asked Diana, when they’d taken seats in a secluded corner of the hall. Wally shoved the PDA her way and watched happily as she read the information aloud.
“So theres the how….if these things posses the power to unseal magic….but the why and the where are still unaccounted for.” Superman mused, sitting back in his chair.
“Exactly.” Muttered John, mood falling with every word the Man Of Steel spoke. He’s felt so elated just a moment ago, thinking they’d solved the mystery.
“Could she be in this..” Mari squinted at the font,” This Hyrule place?”
“Possibly, but that doesn’t account for where Hyrule *is*.”
“Someone go get Zatanna. We need a Sorceress for this.”
“right-o!” Quipped Wally, still grinning like a madman. He zipped away, PDA and all, before anyone could offer. John stared at the seat he’d been in moments before, slightly uneasy looking.
“What's the matter, John?” Mari asked, noticing his renewed gloom.
“I just..” he turned to the two women, “ I don’t want him to get his hopes up only for us never to find Shayera. He’s so damn attached to her, I worry it’ll destroy him if…” Superman, silent through all this, steeled his gaze as he stared out into space.
“Well then, we’ll just have to not fail…”

*****************************************************************************************************

“ Well, that was a fine calamity.” Zelda drawled, one hand covering the bleeding cut over Shayera’s brow. Link laughed uproariously, almost falling off the courtyard wall in his mirth. Shayera grimaced. Having met the young Hero of Time the next day after her arrival, Shayera had taken to his love of swordplay like a little green alien to Alpha Centauri.
In the first week, Shayera had been gaped at while at Court, her wings sticking out just as they did on Earth. But she’s begun to actually socialize, finding people among the mass of Hylian nobility who were not so stuck up as to snub the newcomer, though much of that good fortune was certainly a result of her friendship with the Crown Princess.
By the second week, Shayera had become worried about home, not comforted at all by the thought that the gorgeous land of Hyrule might be her home. She missed Wally and Stargirl, even Mari and John coming into her thoughts every so often.

After a month and a half, hope had failed her, and she’d finally come to terms with the fact that she may forever be simply Lady Shayera of the Hylian Court. Not Shayera Hol of Earth, and certainly never Hawkgirl. To her shock, it didn’t bother her when she thought of it. What did she really have on Earth besides her few friends? Rex, her child, would never come to be, and John would marry Mari. Hro was dead, and hated her anyway, and Katar…Carter, was still too creepy to ever be boyfriend material. People still hated her even though many didn’t know the true story, and her homeworld was a bloody mess. Yet on whatever planet Hyrule was on, Shayera had Link and Zelda, Holly, several Gerudo including their leader and Sage, Nabooru, and the nobles at court who were of a decent sort. So she’d gradually let go of her desire to return to Earth and adopted the dress of Hylian women quite easily. She’d even begun to enjoy styling her hair, for goodness sake!
“Well, that’s that. Now I think it wise that we abandon our sport for today and head into the gardens. Holly said she’d leave out a picnic!” Zelda said, pulling Shayera to her feet and grabbing Link’s arm. Together, the trio laughed their way into the main courtyard, where the roses were in full bloom for their enjoyment. Zelda sighed happily as she lay her head on Shayera’s leg and stared up at the blue sky.
“Hey Shy?”
“Yeah, Zel?”
“I talked to Father this morning with Link…and..” Link grinned, ready for the surprise he’d had to keep to himself all morning at the Princess’s request.
“You know how the common folk have reacted to you, right?”
“Well, yes. They seem to truly like me.” Link snorted.
“Adore, more like.” Shayera blushed.
“Well….Father seems to think you need a more…permanent place in Hyrule, especially after the way you commanded the Sorcerers against Lydelia.” Lydelia had been a once-prosperous kingdom to the south of Lake Hylia who’s King had decided he wanted the Triforce for himself. Shayera had plunged into battle, commanding the Sorcerers to victory against Lydelia’s powerful Witch of the Waters. The power-hungry dynasty was desolate now, its people given citizenship as Hylians and it’s nobles locked up for their involvement in the short battle. Shayera had been a hero.
“What would you say to, to---“ A thunderous crash interrupted her words, and Link sighed.
“Save it for later, Zel. We got company!”

Current Mood:

Shayera opened her eyes to an opulent room bathed in sunlight. Blinking, she realized she was lying under the covers of a large oak bed, wearing a silky white nightdress she knew she didn’t own.
She sat up, and knew for sure the dress was someone else’s. For one, it was a bit tight around the bosom. Secondly, it was too short, barely reaching half-calf on her. Gently, she moved aside the thin coverlet and set her bare feet on the cold stone floor, which felt remarkably refreshing in the warm air.
“So, you awaken, mistress.” Only ages of military training and seven years of living around Batman prevented Shayera from leaping to her feet and going on the attack. An old woman stood in the doorway, having pushed aside the green---Shayera flinched---hangings.
She was fairly good-looking, a handsome woman whose age Shayera guessed at around a human 70. For the woman wasn’t human at all. Pointed ears the length of a pre-teen girl’s hand poked out of each side of a puffy white bonnet that matched the pristine apron around the woman’s middle. Her eyes, a violet color, twinkled kindly. Shayera relaxed.
“ Yes. I am Shayera, ma’am.” She said, inclining her head. The old woman smiled brightly and came forward, gently pushing away the curtains of the gold-rimmed windows. A gorgeous garden sparkled on the ground floor before them.

“I am Holly, Mistress.” She said, “I am the Head of the Royal Staff..” Holly turned back to Shayera, handing her a cotton outer robe to cover the slim nightdress. Shayera took it, confused.
“ Royal, Holly? Where am I?” Holly frowned for a moment, deep in thought.
“Well, that depends. To me, you are in Hyrule Castle, the seat of the Hyperion Dynasty which has ruled over Hyrule since the beginning of recorded history. To you, well, I don’t know the answer to that.” She stared pointedly at Shayera’s wings as they adjusted to the cotton robe sliding over them. It was then Shayera noticed that Holly had already cut holes for them in both the robe and nightdress.
“I guess that’s true. Ever hear of Earth?” Holly shook her head, and Shayera felt a sinking feeling begin to form in the pit of her stomach. Even Thanagar knew of Earth, and they were galaxies apart. Where, then, was Hyrule in all of this? The mysterious stones popped into her head. She was about to mention them to Holly when the woman suddenly realized something.
“Oh, look at this dawdling! I was supposed to bring you before the King and Princess. They’re waiting for you in the Grand Library. Here, put this on. The back dips, so no worries for your lovely wings there.” A simple silk dress was tossed at the winged warrior, one which she slipped on as soon as the robe and nightdress came off. It was light and comfortable, and so out of character for Shayera with it’s elegance. Sure, she’d worn that pink thing on Earth, but that was modern. This was something Diana would like.
“This way, you can help Their Majesties figure out what happened and where you’re from. I’m certain the Princess will be able to help you. Shes a Sage, one of seven who protects the land with her Power.” Shayera took a deep breath, the certainty in Holly’s voice. As they made their way along a sunlit corridor, passing by guards who’s eyes popped at the exotic woman the Head Housekeeper was leading towards the Great Library. Shayera, far from being uncomfortable under all the looks, felt rather flattered. These people didn’t know about her troubled past, and saw the woman none but John had ever seen in the warrior before.
The corridors were as beautiful as the room in which Shayera had awoken. Marbles and gold made up everything from the floor tiles to the walls and ceiling. Shayera had never seen anything like it, even on Themyscira or in Queen Aubrey’s palace. It was delicate and intricate in a way that just didn’t look possible. It was as if it just appeared there.
“Mistress, we’re here.” Shayera returned her attention to Holly, who stood by a large set of doors made of oak. To Shayera’s shock, the three stones were there, framing a large triangle made out of three smaller triangles wrought in gold. She said nothing, however, and pushed one side of the door open. Instantly, the smell of fresh cut flowers filled her nose along with the musk of a well-used library.

There was an enormous rug covering the large central reading area, which ended in a fireplace set between two while doors leading to a large balcony outside. In two of three blue armchairs awaited her hosts. The man, this King Hyperion, was short and stout, with drooping elfin ears and a large brown beard streaked liberally with grey. His eyes were large and honest brown orbs that looked back at Shayera with a polite and mild curiosity. The girl, the Princess-Sage, was small, lithe, and very beautiful. Her shining blonde hair was held back from her face by a golden tiara, allowing her clear blue eyes to gaze at Shayera pleasantly, She was a smiling girl, but her eyes gave Shayera the impression she was her close to her 26 years.
“ Milady, welcome to Hyrule. I am Helion Hyperion, King of Hyrule. This is my daughter, Zelda.” Zelda nodded her head, “ Please, come sit. We have much to discuss…” He trailed off expectantly.
“Shayera, your majesty. Shayera Hol of Earth.”
“Milady Shayera, please.” He gestured to the third armchair, which Shayera took as gracefully as she could. King Hyperion sat back in his seat, stroking his beard.
“You are wondering,” Said Zelda, “Why we’re so interested in a stranger to our lands.” That was true. Shayera had to wonder why a random (albeit interesting) person would become the immediate guest of the rulers of a kingdom.
“Yes, in fact. I haven’t been treated this kindly since the time I met some of a companion’s friends.” Thoughts of Mr. Hawkins’s excellent cooking reminded Shayera she hadn’t eaten that day, but she brushed the thought aside. There was probably no such thing a Cajun food in Hyrule anyway.
“You came here just days after our treasures---the Zora Sapphire, Goron Ruby, and Kokiri Emerald disappeared—“
“I saw those! They brought me here!” Shayera interjected. Zelda and her father exchanged stunned looks at her words.
“You did?” Explained the King, eyes widening even larger than normal.
“Yes. You see, I was…lost…after the one I love turned from me. So I left to a place called Fate’s Tower, where my friends Izna and Dr. Fate reside. Fate is a collector and a sorcerer, but also gave me shelter after my people—Thanagarians—used me to nearly destroy the planet Earth. I felt…drawn to these stones, which were hidden in a room off of the main study. I….then I woke here.” Both King Hyperion and Zelda looked at her in shock.

“You…you have to be here by their will then.” Whispered Zelda in a reverent tone, eyes focused at nothing in particular. She smoothed her dress and fell back against her seat, suddenly weak.
“By whom?”
“In Hyrule,” began the King, “there exists three goddesses. Din of Power, Farore of Courage, and Nayru of Wisdom. Din created the raw land, Farore gave it flora and fauna, and Nayru gave it life and magic. When they flew up to the Heavens, they created the Triforce,” Shayera looked at the symbol over the fireplace. The Triforce,” and hid it in the land. Those three stones are remnants of the three sisters power as well.”
“If the stones called you, it means the Goddesses wished you here. I think they may wish to help you this way. You said you hadn’t been treated well lately?” Shayera hung her head.
“My people, as I said. My former people. I was told by my fiancé that I had to secretly collect information on Earth’s defenses. Earth isn’t just a kingdom, it’s a whole ball—a world like the moon only larger—of life. I accepted, thinking I’d be saving the humans from invasion by our enemies, the Gordanians.I was lied to. Thanagar wished to attack the Gordanian homeworld directly and use the Earth to rebound the necessary power. I turned on them then, realizing my mistake, and gave my true friends the plans to stop the Thanagarian threat. I…was an outcast. The accused me of knowing the true plan, of lying about my mission. Eventually, I returned to stop a bit of sorcery some young boys performed that released a dead man from the afterlife.” She trailed off, hoping they wouldn’t ask her the rest. She didn’t think she could talk about John.
“Something else happened…” Zelda said softly, luminous eyes all sympathy and kindness. Shayera sighed.
“I I was--am—in love with a human named John. He...He’s with another woman despite having seen our possible son in the future. so I left and wound up here.” Zelda lay her hand on Shayera’s, but this time her look was one of understanding, as if to say ‘I know’. Shayera made a mental note to ask her about it later. King Hyperion cleared his throat, and both women looked away.
“Well now. What shall you do now, milady?” He asked. Shayera was silent, lost in thought. It was apparent she was trapped here for an indefinite amount of time. A dull pang hit her at that thought. Poor Wally would be heartbroken if she never came home. And there would no one to get him to patch it up with John, either.
“I do not know. I have no home, no family, and no future on Earth without John.” Zelda smiled softly at her father and spoke.
“Father, what do you think of Miss Shayera joining the Royal Court as my Lady-in-waiting? After all,” she added with a smirk,” there are some places Knight Link cannot follow.” Shayera laughed heartily at that, highly amused by the shocked look on King Hyperion’s face that his daughter should insinuate anything of the sort.
Stammering, he found his voice.

“Aye…that…that would be beneficial to us all. What say you, Miss Shayera? If you accept, this castle will be your home, our people your family, and an honorable life your future.”
Shayera could only sit rigidly in her seat. Again? Could she adopt a new world to protect, a new family to care about as she’d come to love the League? She looked at Zelda, whos eyes glowed with interest…and hope. She needed a friend unlike those she must know in the royal circle. She needed someone like Shayera. Again, Shayera thought of those she called friends on Earth. Stargirl and Mari, Wally and Vigilante, Bruce and Diana, J’onn and Clark. She would love them always, but…
“I accept, Princess.” Zelda stuck out her tongue in a very un-princess like manner.
“Well then, first rule for you, Lady Shayera. Call me Zelda!”
* * *

John Stewart didn’t want to be in Las Vegas. Not after he’d just made the most difficult choice of his life. And yet, Mari wanted him there while she did her stuff on the catwalk. But the moment he laid eyes on the Prima Donna hotel, the new one, he felt the ill feeling in his stomach intensify tenfold. He could still hear the argument, the bomb under his fingers, the panic as he realized he was too late, her scream when he shoved her out of harms way.

The tender look on her face when he woke up. His memory of white light as he lay, clinically dead, in her arms. Her stammered denial and the beauty that lay under the mask. Guilt gnawed at his insides. Shayera was devastated, according to Stargirl, who’d overheard Wally and Mari’s conversation leaving Shayera’s room. And Wally, if Stargirl was right, was now someone he had to avoid. His heart sank as he fell onto his bed in the hotel. His former love was gone and heartbroken and his best friend was ready to kick his ass. He missed the old days, when the three of them were simply three great friends---dysfunctional friends---but friends nevertheless. They’d bickered and bantered and the others had grown fond of hearing them loudly discussing one thing or another. J’onn in particular had always found their relationships refreshingly normal for the type of job they were in.
Even when he and Shayera fell in love, they were always the same. Except then Wally could find all sorts of things to say to get John worked up or Shayera laughing. And now Shayera never laughed and Wally had grown….well, mature. And it was that maturity that killed his spirit, because he simply was not the type of person to ever really grow up.
Then there was Mari: beautiful, intelligent, strong. Everything he looked for in a woman ( and coincidently everything Shayera was too,.). Certainly deserving of all the good things in life. And recently John had come to wonder if he was one of those good things, or just a bump in the road for the supermodel. He closed his eyes, hoping for clarity when he opened them again. But, alas, he felt the same sense of loss and the ill feeling of wrongness when he opened them again, just as before.
He sat up, eyes staring at the TV, as the inevitable thought crossed his mind. He wanted Shayera.
A deep breath and a few mental preparations later, John was standing outside the hotel just as Mari and her fellow models returned from the show. The girls all waved at him as they passed, and John smiled back, though without his usual charm. Right away he could tell that Mari knew he had made the decision he knew she’d probably seen coming.

“John.” She said simply, inviting him to sit on the bench next to her. She looked up at the faded stars above the bright lights of the Strip for a moment, giving John time to gather his thoughts without interruption.
“ You knew this would happen, didn’t you Mari?” He said softly. She turned her head to look at him with an expression one would wear when a child admitted a wrong. He chuckled ruefully. Of course she did.
“ Kind of. Yes. It wasn’t too hard to see. You looked at her with this…guilt. I’ve never seen anyone look so bad.”
“ Hm.” was his noncommittal answer.
“ You really hurt her, whatever you said. I like the girl, John, and even I couldn’t be happy with your decision.” The comment that Mari sincerely liked his former lover made him blink. Mari arched an eyebrow.
“ Ooooh, you should of heard the kind of things we told each other, Johnny-boy. You fold your socks.” She laughed, high and melodic as he turned a bright red, imagining what things he knew Shayera could tell the model about his underwear drawer. He sobered quickly when he remembered why they were sitting there.
“ You can, if you want.” He said, hoping she’d realize he was letting her be the dumper. It was the least he could do for her, let it be her right to say she’d dumped him. And she did, with a sigh he knew mean’t she didn’t want to.
“ Go get the woman you really want to be with, John. I—“ she stopped, putting a hand to her ear. John did too, giving him a better concentration for the emergency call coming over the comm..

“ Founding Members and any members with magic abilities: Report to the conference room immediately. We have a member missing. John,” the voice added to his earpiece only, it was J’onn. “ Its Shayera.”
John and Mari exchanged looks of horror, though Mari could plainly see grief on the other hero’s face the likes of which she really didn’t want to experience. In a moment, however, John had a bubble around them both and they were flying through the air towards Metropolis Tower. Mari squeezed her eyes shut, unable to believe that John had broken free only to lose what he loved most. And for his sake and Shayera’s, she hoped she wouldn’t have to.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Wally West, alias The Flash, was pale and drawn when John arrived along with Zatanna, whom he’d run into on the way up the elevator. Spotting John, Wally tensed as if Lex Luthor had just entered the room. John opened his mouth to tell the younger man he was through with Mari, that he loved the woman Wally regarded as a sister and always would, but the hurt in the redhead’s eyes stopped him. Ashamed, he looked down at his feet.

“Everyone.” Said Superman in a voice that sounded too tiny for such a large man, “Thanks for your quick response….I’m afraid the news is rather serious. Shayera was in Dr. Fate’s tower, when an unidentifiable golden statue…..we’re not sure what it did, but she screamed and now is missing.” He looked at each of the original seven in turn. Diana, for once, was actually frightened for Shayera. Batman and J’onn looked grave. Wally’s eyes were somewhat blurry and over bright. Superman sighed when he locked eyes with John.
From beside the Man of Steel, Dr. Fate and his wife stood in silence.
“ The artifacts,” began Fate,” are something I discovered along my otherworldly travels. They have…a powerful radiance. Other than that, I do not know….”
“What bothers me,” said Batman slowly, startling them all, “ is why Shayera would go near anything of the like. She’s no fool, she knows better now that she used to. Nothing much seems to faze he---“ The proverbial light bulb went on over Batman’s head, and he spun to face John.
“ You…you didn’t…..you rejected her, didn’t you? That’s why you were gone…damnit Lantern.” He growled. Something in John snapped just then, and he shoved the caped crusader away.
“ Talk to me about screw ups, will you? YOU told her all about the mission didn’t you?”
“ And you,” replied the Batman coolly,” told her about Rex in the first place, didn’t you?” The room was eerily silent after that, mostly out of the fact all but the two men knew nothing about Rex Stewart, the Warhawk. Gently, J’onn asked (mentally) for all but the seven to leave, which they did out of the desire to not get between the brooding knight and the Marine
“ What, “ began Wally, “the hell. Who is Rex and what mission?” John took a breath, then glared at Batman.
“ Go ahead. Tell them about Shayera’s son.” He looked up at Wally painfully,” and my son.” Diana gasped softly, covering her hands with her mouth.
Wally seemed frozen in place, while Superman had to take a seat.
“ Shes never been pregnant.” Said Wally plainly,” We would’ve—“
“ John didn’t say she already had been.” Stated Batman.
Several more seconds of stunned silence followed this as Wally attempted to understand how that was possible. The others weren’t doing much better, if the look on Superman’s face was any indication.
“ The future.,” Said Fate, gliding forward. “ you saw the future.”
“ A future,” Batman corrected,” one in which Cadmus won. Diana, you disappeared because the time stream became so convoluted that somehow you either never left Theymscira or were never born. That was when we met Terry and my older self.”
“ Terry?”
“He was a kid who took---or will take---my place as Batman. He died in that timeline. An so did Static. A man calling himself Chronos used a time machine to attempt and steal my utility belt. He’s from Terry’s time. Now he’s stuck repeating the same moment over and over again thanks to a program my other self wrote.”
“ That was also where we met Rex—The Warhawk----who along with Static, Terry, and the older Batman the last of the Justice League. The attack on the Watchtower was a success then. Rex….spilled the beans when we met them…called me dad.” John said, leaning back into the chair.
“ Which is why everything led to what it is. Why I tried to stay with you, Mari, when I had really wanted Shayera back. I..didn’t want to be fate’s fool.” He laughed hollowly, ignoring Mari’s concerned face.” Just like Oedipus’s father. I got the exact fate I was trying so hard to avoid.”
“ And that’s who Rex Stewart is. The son of two of us and the last of us.”
“ But right now, that’s not important. What's important is that we figure out what took Shayera.” From his cloak, Fate produced a glass orb in which a tiny ball inscribed with three golden jewels was floating innocently.
“ Have any of you ever seen these?” He asked, laying the protective orb on the table, “ I found them in hyperspace coming home and realized they are of danger, but I did not find it’s source.” Diana took the glass orb in her hands and looked it over.

“ I cant tell you where its from specifically, but I can take this to my mother. She told me once of meeting many strangers from a trail called the Silk Road ages ago. But I’m troubled about all this. John..” she turned to him, “ you’ve had a future visitation, same as a vision a priestess of Delphi would have. There is great trouble in defying such a gift. This must be fixed. If its not, we may all be in trouble.”

Author Notes: Hey all, if you're wondering where Bats and J'onn are...well Batman refused to download and J'onn looked too human. So they're not here...same goes for Dr. Fate.

Chapter 1 pt 1: In Which The Accident Occurs

Shayera Hol’s room at the headquarters of the Justice League, a collection of hundreds of beings from all over the world (and the stars) in an attempt to protect the innocent and the good, was not sparse as would be expected, but held many things of interest. There was her Hawkgirl mask, on a mannequin head on her vanity, the pearl fiancé’s earrings she hadn’t the heart to throw out, and doodles and drawings she’d done over the years on the walls. It was by no means a place for the drooping-winged, thoroughly depressed woman.
He had denied her. Had denied THEIR SON. Shayera hadn’t realized she’d wanted a boy until she’d begged the truth out of Batman about Rex. He was a tall man in the future, with pale skin like hers, and eyes and lips like hers, but his father’s thick black hair and facial structure. He’d been a serious man, reassuring John that Shayera hadn’t actually laid an egg. Her lip twitched as she lay on her bed at the though of future-Virgil’s jokes.

“ Shayera was one cranky pregnant lady! Then again, if I’d laid an egg THAT size…”. She’d made a mental note not to worry when Wally and Virgil started hanging out once the teen joined the League. If she was still there.
Shayera replaced the brush on the vanity and stared out the window. Up in space, the stars and blackness were comforting in their uniformity and their stark beauty. Now the clouds and sky she loved was there, and she knew she could easily go for a fly without being accosted. While the people of Earth still remembered her race’s attempts to destroy them, Superman had given the official story of how she, foolishly, had helped her people, thinking it would, in the end, of saved them, and of her fight against Hro with John. Lois Lane had printed the article, and her reputable career and honestly won over many people. And the Mexican woman and her child had followed with the story of how Shayera saved them. The clipped article was on her foam board. After that, a few more people came out telling of the good she’d done, and the hate mail had stopped. Those who truly hated her didn’t do anything after their battle with Darkside. Whose side she was on was clear.
But flight, and everything else, seemed pointless in comparison to Rex’s never-born status. His father saw to that.
Someone knocked on her door.

“Shayera?” It was Mari. Shayera felt a smile tug at her lips. While they loved the same man, Mari had been nothing but nice to her since they met. And there was worry in her voice now.
“ Come in, Mari.” She said. The door opened, and a worried Mari walked in, followed by an uncharacteristically subdued Wally. Shayera sighed.
“ Hey you.” Mari said, “ we’re getting worried out there. You haven’t come out of you room in two days, you haven’t eaten and—“
“—BATS is worried!” finished Wally, eyes bugging, “ He never worries. Well, not that we see.” It was true of Batman, but Shayera knew that he was a man who hated to see others as lost and broken as he had once been. No doubt he regretted telling her so much about her never-born son. She made a mental note to seek him out later on.
“ I—“

“ ---am not ok” Wally cut in before she spoke two words, frowning.
“ Exactly. But you don’t have to worry. I’m heading for Fate’s Tower in a few minutes…see if I can find my center again.” She rose from the vanity and turned to smile weakly at them. Both looked thoroughly unconvinced that she’d find it again, or ever. For that matter, so was Shayera. Her calm had been gone the second John saw the face underneath the mask.

“ I’ve got to get over there now. Izna is expecting me, and it would be rude to make her wait.” She got up to leave, her bag in one hand, but was stopped after about a foot by Wally hugging her around the waist. She looked down at him fondly, patting the mop of red hair that so perfectly suited him.
“ Wally, I can’t move with 200 lbs of Superhero around my wait. I’m not Superman, you know.” She teased. Wally only hugged her tighter in response.
“ Wally.” She said, a little more of a command in her voice. He looked up at her, and the puppy-dog look nearly made her want to unpack. He had that odd ability to endear himself every time one came in contact with him, until even the Batman had voluntarily come to the Flash Museum opening upon request.
“ Please? I really need this. I promise I’ll call you. After all, I do have your home and cell phone numbers.” He let go, but looked down in a pout worthy of a petulant toddler. Like a little brother, Shayera noted, trying to keep his big sister from going away to college.
“Thanks.” She bent down and pecked him on the cheek, pleased to see the sisterly affection brightening the younger hero’s face. She didn’t usual give open displays of affection to her friends. Except for Wally, J’onn, and Superman, she didn’t really show much at all. Mari had been the first since the creation of the new League to earn even her deep respect. And such things did not come without a lot of work.
“ Bye, Mari. Take care, alright?” She gave the woman a half-hug and a smile.
“ Ok, Shayera. Just don’t drop off the face of the Earth again. Flash drove the guys crazy last time, I’m told.” She threw a humorous glance at Wally, the aforementioned Flash. Shayera nodded.
“Alright.”

“Shayera, welcome back.” Came the soft voice of Izna Cramer-Nelson as Shayera entered the garden after returning her mace to Fate’s pocket universe. She smiled gently, dropping to the ground beside Izna before her shoulders sank and she half-fainted into the other woman’s shoulder. Izna put an arm around Shayera as she began to tell her exactly what occurred. When she got to Rex, Shayera began crying in earnest, her tears dropping into the flowerbed in almost perfectly timed intervals.

“ The future is always in motion, Shayera. What was may still be. Has he denied he loves you still?” Shayera shook her head.
“No. He never said it….”
“Then there is hope. If he cannot say he does not love you, then he either cannot because he really does love you, or he cannot lie and tell you you no longer hold a place. Mari will know this, for she will ask him. Then she will know he cannot fully love her. And she is a woman not to be content with such a man.”
“ Thank you, Izna. But I cannot help but feel wrongness as of now. Something drives me ill inside, something…..like I need to be somewhere else.” Izna nodded.
“Perhaps a good book will help, for now. Feel free to browse my collection in the study. It’s the gold-colored shelf.” Izna gently lifted Shayera to a standing position, and shooed her on her way. The Thanagarian woman laughed at the mothering as she made her way into the study.
Izna was a godsend, most assuredly. For a moment, despite the ill feeling in the pit of Shayera’s stomach, she felt calm. Izna was right about Mari. John, regardless of whether he loved Shayera or not, was too conflicted with himself to ever be the supporting man to a woman like Mari, a strong woman who had her weak moments just like everyone else.

The study of Dr. Fate was filled with archaic magic books and items from all across time and space. Many of them were of great interest to Shayera, especially those from her birth-planet. She winced when she passed the spell book used to raise Solomon Grundy, but stopped to sigh at the miniature relief of an Egyptian Queen with wings.
Just as she passed the relief, the ill feeling in her stomach disappeared. Shayera stopped, perplexed. Turning her head, she saw a glow emanating from behind a shelf of potion ingredients. Despite her normally excellent judgment, she found herself walking steadily towards the source of the light, the rightness of her actions dispelling the ill feeling of being in the wrong place. The light brightened tenfold as she pulled aside a curtain.
The object in question was small, only a few inches high. Shayera could make out three golden triangles stuck together as the light softened and then dissipated altogether.
